The G20 in Pittsburgh showed us how pitifully fearful our leaders have become. What no terrorist could do to us, our own leaders did.

Out of fear of the possibility of a terrorist attack, authorities militarize our towns, scare our people away, stop daily life and quash our constitutional rights.

For days, downtown Pittsburgh, home to the G20, was a turned into a militarized people-free ghost town. Sirens screamed day and night. Helicopters crisscrossed the skies. Gunboats sat in the rivers. The skies were defended by Air Force jets. Streets were barricaded by huge cement blocks and fencing. Bridges were closed with National Guard across the entrances. Public transportation was stopped downtown. Amtrak train service was suspended for days.

In many areas, there were armed police every 100 feet. Businesses closed. Schools closed. Tens of thousands were unable to work.

Four thousand police were on duty plus 2500 National Guard plus Coast Guard and Air Force and dozens of other security agencies. A thousand volunteers from other police forces were sworn in to help out.

Police were dressed in battle gear, bulky black ninja turtle outfits: helmets with clear visors, strapped on body armor, shin guards, big boots, batons, and long guns.

In addition to helicopters, the police had hundreds of cars and motorcycles , armored vehicles, monster trucks, small electric go-karts. There were even passenger vans screaming through town so stuffed with heavily armed ninja turtles that the side and rear doors remained open.

No terrorists showed up at the G20.

Since no terrorists showed up, those in charge of the heavily armed security forces chose to deploy their forces around those who were protesting.

Not everyone is delighted that 20 countries control 80% of the world’s resources. Several thousand of them chose to express their displeasure by protesting.

Unfortunately, the officials in charge thought that it was more important to create a militarized people-free zone around the G20 people than to allow freedom of speech, freedom of assembly or the freedom to protest.

It took a lawsuit by the Center for Constitutional Rights and the ACLU to get any major protest permitted anywhere near downtown Pittsburgh. Even then, the police “forgot” what was permitted and turned people away from areas of town. Hundreds of police also harassed a bus of people who were giving away free food — repeatedly detaining the bus and searching it and its passengers without warrants.

Then a group of young people decided that they did not need a permit to express their human and constitutional rights to freedom. They announced they were going to hold their own gathering at a city park and go down the deserted city streets to protest the G20. Maybe 200 of these young people were self-described anarchists, dressed in black, many with bandanas across their faces. The police warned everyone these people were very scary. My cab driver said the anarchist spokesperson looked like Harry Potter in a black hoodie. The anarchists were joined in the park by hundreds of other activists of all ages, ultimately one thousand strong, all insisting on exercising their right to protest.

This drove the authorities crazy.

Battle dressed ninja turtles showed up at the park and formed a line across one entrance. Helicopters buzzed overhead. Armored vehicles gathered.

The crowd surged out of the park and up a side street yelling, chanting, drumming, and holding signs. As they exited the park, everyone passed an ice cream truck that was playing “It’s a small world after all.” Indeed.

Any remaining doubts about the militarization of the police were dispelled shortly after the crowd left the park. A few blocks away the police unveiled their latest high tech anti-protestor toy. It was mounted on the back of a huge black truck. The Pittsburgh-Gazette described it as Long Range Acoustic Device designed to break up crowds with piercing noise. Similar devices have been used in Fallujah, Mosul and Basra Iraq. The police backed the truck up, told people not to go any further down the street and then blasted them with piercing noise.

The crowd then moved to other streets. Now they were being tracked by helicopters. The police repeatedly tried to block them from re-grouping ultimately firing tear gas into the crowd injuring hundreds including people in the residential neighborhood where the police decided to confront the marchers. I was treated to some of the tear gas myself and I found the Pittsburgh brand to be spiced with a hint of kelbasa. Fortunately, I was handed some paper towels soaked in apple cider vinegar which helped fight the tears and cough a bit. Who would have thought?

After the large group broke and ran from the tear gas, smaller groups went into commercial neighborhoods and broke glass at a bank and a couple of other businesses. The police chased and the glass breakers ran. And the police chased and the people ran. For a few hours.

By day the police were menacing, but at night they lost their cool. Around a park by the University of Pittsburgh the ninja turtles pushed and shoved and beat and arrested not just protestors but people passing by. One young woman reported she and her friend watched Grey’s Anatomy and were on their way back to their dorm when they were cornered by police. One was bruised by police baton and her friend was arrested. Police shot tear gas, pepper spray, smoke canisters, and rubber bullets. They pushed with big plastic shields and struck with batons.

The biggest march was Friday. Thousands of people from Pittsburgh and other places protested the G20. Since the court had ruled on this march, the police did not confront the marchers. Ninja turtled police showed up in formation sometimes and the helicopters hovered but no confrontations occurred.

Again Friday night, riot clad police fought with students outside of the University of Pittsburgh. To what end was just as unclear as the night before.

Ultimately about 200 were arrested, mostly in clashes with the police around the University.

The G20 leaders left by helicopter and limousine.

Pittsburgh now belongs again to the people of Pittsburgh. The cement barricades were removed, the fences were taken down, the bridges and roads were opened. The gunboats packed up and left. The police packed away their ninja turtle outfits and tear gas and rubber bullets. They don’t look like military commandos anymore. No more gunboats on the river. No more sirens all the time. No more armored vehicles and ear splitting machines used in Iraq. On Monday the businesses will open and kids will have to go back to school. Civil society has returned.

It is now probably even safe to exercise constitutional rights in Pittsburgh once again.

The USA really showed those terrorists didn’t we?

“Pittsburgh is what a police state looks like!”

I have been to dozens of protests, large and small, since my son was killed in Iraq, but I have never seen anything like today and the only term I can use is: Profound Overkill. There were easily two cops/soldiers for every one of us protesters…or maybe even 3 to 1.

About two thousand of us gathered in Arsenal Park in Pittsburgh to try and march downtown. We were all peaceful and had no weapons. We had only traveled a few blocks when cops dressed like they were in full combat with heavily armed opponents stopped us and blocked our way with a new weapon called “LRAD:” A new “crowd control” device. LRAD stands for: “Long Range Acoustical Device.” I was, unfortunately near it when the cops turned it on. It’s painful.

The group dispersed and went in many different directions. Some of us got to a corner a few blocks up from where we were initially stopped and I am not kidding, at least 500 cops were stopped in formation at this intersection with their gas masks on and nightsticks at the ready to crack the head of anyone who actually tried to peacefully cross their lines…unarmed, of course.

I spoke to dozens of cops today and tried to explain to them that we peaceful protesters are only trying to exercise our 1st Amendment rights and the cops should be protecting us, members of their own class, and not suppressing our freedoms and actually physically hurting us.

There was absolutely no reason for the over-reaction of the police state to the protesters today. Do not believe the news propaganda that says the protesters were the cause of the violence…it was the cops. The thugs even dropped tear gas from helicopters. We’re like ants trying to struggle against anteaters.

Seeing the National Guard troops, fresh from Iraq, broke my heart the hardest. I also talked to dozens of them, none had ever heard of posse commitatus, and asked them if my son, their brother, died in Iraq so they could steal the rights of his mother. Most of them wouldn’t even look at me. The cops and soldiers should be ashamed of themselves for allowing their selves to be used as tools of the Robber Class “elites.”

“Just following orders” is not a defense.

The G20 will announce tomorrow that they will become the new “permanent council” for international economic cooperation. Who the hell do they think they are? Who voted for this? Who gives them the authority to have this power over our wellbeing and our very lives?

We do, that’s who.

We allow the Robber Class complete, destructive control over our lives by not taking to the streets and outnumbering the thugs 10 to 1; 100 to 1; 1000 to 1

There’s so few of them and so many of us.

The "Steel City" gives new meaning to the police state

The folks who want to speak out at the G20 in Pittsburgh are not being organized by Glenn Beck and his ilk nor being choreographed by Fox News. That's what concerns the criminal elite who will gather to further their agenda of economic slavery and put on a show of force against 'free speech.'

Free speech doesn't come easy.
IN THE weeks leading up to the Group of 20 economic summit of world leaders in Pittsburgh September 24 and 25, the mainstream media saturated the city with alarming stories of "violent" and "unruly" protesters.

But these stories also reassured residents that a slew of law enforcement agencies--local and state police, SWAT teams, the National Guard and the Secret Service--would ensure public order and protect private and public property throughout the city.
One question, however, didn't receive as much attention: who would protect the right to free speech?

Ahead of his arrival in Pittsburgh for the summit, President Barack Obama made it clear that he didn't value the opinions of protesters, anyway. "I was always a big believer...that focusing on concrete, local, immediate issues that have an impact on people's lives is what really makes a difference, and that having protests about abstractions [such] as global capitalism or something, generally, is not really going to make much of a difference," Obama said.

But if Obama thinks the demonstrations are irrelevant, his administration is going to great lengths to harass and intimidate them. The projected cost of the police presence--to include some 2,000 National Guard troops, 1,000 state troopers, 900 Pittsburgh police and perhaps thousands more police from nearby municipalities--is upward of $20 million.

The authorities will have helicopters, Humvees, prototypes of a new generation of top-of-the-line police cruisers--and specially outfitted police bicycles. "It ties in nicely with the whole green effort," said Chris Andrews, general manager of the military equipment contractor that donated the bikes.

Several buildings and sports fields belonging to the Pittsburgh public schools have been made available to law enforcement and military agencies to house personnel and provide landing pads for the helicopters.

But activists, on the other hand, have had to file numerous lawsuits to get city and state agencies to issue permits for peaceful protests and other activities. The city also put pressure on universities and other institutions to distance themselves from planned demonstrations, according to activists. {more}

Police vans from Philadelphia and beyond patrol the streets of downtown creating a state of fear, a state of occupation. Over 4000 police, including 2000 national guard troops, some fresh from Iraq, are on call to ensure that Obama’s G20 party goes without a hitch.

Already the police have been going out of there way to create a state of fear before the summit starts. Seeds of Peace, a group that provides free food for activists, has been repeatedly harassed, their bus impounded, and a member arrested without reason.

The Landslide Community Farm has also been raided and illegally searched by over 20 cops. No warrant was provided, the only reason given is that it was a matter of “national security.” Meanwhile the police raided several activist homes overnight, drawing guns on people, and towing cars. And after being told that the 3 Rivers Climate Convergence could leave tents setup overnight, low and behold, they have all disappeared by morning.

What is important to recognize is that this is not just a rogue Pittsburgh police force. Because the G20 has been declared a “National Security Event” the Secret Service is in charge of all police operations in relation to the G20. The Secret Service are Obama’s people. They answer to him. The preemptive repression on the streets of Pittsburgh is being done on Obama’s watch. Don’t forget that.

In an interview with the Pittsburgh Post, Obama said that protests are ineffective and that globalization is inevitable. So much for all his fiery campaign rhetoric about renegotiating NAFTA and other trade deals that have screwed workers and destroyed the environment. {more}

National security investigation? and lawsuits.....
The 16-page lawsuit focuses on three specific incidents involving the Seeds of Peace Collective, a group founded in 1986 to provide food and water to protesters. A bus, retrofitted to run on vegetable oil and solar power, that is used by the group to prepare meals, arrived in Pittsburgh from Montana on Sept. 13.

On Friday, members of Seeds of Peace returned to where the bus had been parked and locked in a private driveway on Melwood Avenue in Oakland to find one police officer inside the bus and another in its doorway. The members asked what they were doing and told them they did not have consent to either enter or search the vehicle. The officers had the bus towed to the city's impound lot, and Michael Bowersox, its co-owner, had to pay $220 to get it back.

"This is the absolute worst police harassment I've experienced in 19 years," he said. "We have a long history of being committed to nonviolence, in the tradition of Gandhi and Martin Luther King."The complaint also said that another bus operated by Everybody's Kitchen, which was parked in a private driveway in Bloomfield, was subjected to harassment, too.

Yesterday afternoon, city officials told both buses they had until 6:30 p.m. to vacate the Sassafras Street property where they had been parked. Bob Johnson, an artist who leases the property, said a city building inspector approached the owner yesterday morning, cited him for several code violations and threatened to fine him $1,000 a day unless they moved.

The Seeds of Peace bus is equipped with enough supplies to make 5,000 meals, said Mr. Mark, 29, of Missoula, Mont. Contacts in Pittsburgh helped the food buses get permission to use the Sassafras Street property, which sits under the Bloomfield Bridge and is covered with scrap-metal sculptures. Mr. Johnson allowed police on the grounds on Sunday night when more than 30 police officers dressed in riot gear showed up at about 11:30 p.m., the lawsuit said."They informed the owner that this was a national security investigation and that no warrant was necessary." After about 20 minutes of discussion, Mr. Johnson allowed police to search the property, but they could not go on the buses. {more}

Video footage is pouring onto Youtube that clearly shows riot police in Pittsburgh using intimidation tactics and military weapons to disperse peaceful assemblies in the vicinity of the G20 summit.

In the first video an officer appears on the scene where protesters are peacefully gathered and immediately tells them to leave the area, threatening everyone with arrest should they not comply.

The in a scene that looks as if it took place in Communist China, riot officers form a line parallel to the protesters, extending to both ends of the street, and slowly walk towards them, noisily and simultaneously marching and beating their shields with their batons.

This is a clear intimidation tactic to cause fear and psychologically.. effect the peaceful protesters in an effort to herd them and get them to disperse.

We Are Change and Infowars reporter Luke Rudkowski speaks into a bullhorn throughout, as this complete violation of the First Amendment unfolds. He notes how LRAD sound weapons used in Afghanistan and Iraq are now being used against peaceful American citizens on the streets of Pittsburgh by armed military troops.

Chants of "USA, USA" ring out and protesters holding cameras and signs break into applause at Luke's words as the jackboot police continue to advance. It is hard to believe that this is America.

The LRAD Weapons are then brought to the scene and an announcement blasts out towards the protesters:

"BY ORDER OF THE CITY OF PITTBURGH CHIEF OF POLICE WE HEREBY DECLARE THIS TO BE AN UNLAWFUL ASSEMBLY."

OTHER POLICE ACTION MAY INCLUDE ACTUAL PHYSICAL REMOVAL, THE USE OF RIOT CONTROL AGENTS AND/OR LESS LETHAL MUNITIONS WHICH COULD CAUSE RISK OF INJURY TO THOSE WHO REMAIN."

Try as he may to stop the thousands who will take the streets in the coming days, he’ll have a hard time. Folks in Pittsburgh and from around the country are pissed. They are pissed about Obama’s two wars, they are pissed about impending climate chaos, they are pissed at not being able to put food on the table, and they are pissed about being unable to afford a visit to the doctor. We won’t be stopped by Obama’s attempts at squashing dissent in this country.

G-20: 'Green' City sends 40 cops to Landslide Community Farm (again)

An important part of policing major protests is the pre-emptive raid. How this usally works is, law enforcement picks some relatively benign group or project, such as puppet makers or mobile kitchens, that they are pretty sure will not resist in any way, shape or form, and tear their space apart and declare some basic household items to be dangerous dual-use technology and start arresting people. For this reason, gun-toting tea party-types will never have to worry about this. This is the same mentality that ensures the US picks on nations that actually have working WMD programs, like North Korea or Iran. Bullies beat up on younger siblings, not their parents. It is much safer that way.

In addition to pathetic bullying that resulted in the Seeds of Peace bus being impounded and the permitted marches being denied access to their routes, the City of Pittsburgh, which is in the full throes of greenwashing the spent, burnt-out former industrial town into a success story, had 40 police officers to spare for a raid on Landslide, a local community farm located in Pittsburgh's Hill District, for the second time in less than a year.

In Lead Up to G-20, Police Harassment at Community Farm
More than forty police officers stationed in front of Landslide Community Farm as Department of Public Works removes tires

PITTSBURGH—On Sunday, September 20 just after noon, more than 40 uniformed police officers arrived at Landslide Community Farm in four unmarked twelve-passenger vans. The police were not forthcoming with their reasons for visiting the farm but some officers indicated that their presence was in relation to the upcoming G-20 summit.

Several officers got out of their vans, walking deep into the privately owned farmland to examine the area. During the investigation police were repeatedly told that they were on private property and asked to leave, but refused to comply with the request until tax receipts indicating ownership of the land were presented. At several delicate plants were trampled in the investigation but the extent of the damage is unknown.

Eventually the police left the farmland to investigate a pile of tires on a city-owned lot adjacent to the land. The tires had been gathered from city-owned lots in the area during neighborhood clean-up days. Farm volunteers say that the lots had been neglected by local authorities for years. As part of the clean-up efforts Landslide requested help from various city agencies in removing the tires. While city officials were very helpful in securing dumpsters for other trash, they refused to assist in removing the tires.

The forty police officers remained on the scene for more than eight hours while Pittsburgh Public Works investigated the situation, examined property lines, and eventually hauled away the tires. Employees promised to return at 6:00 am the next morning. They did not comment on the purpose of their return to the Farm.

Farm volunteers expressed concern that so many police officers were called to the scene just to remove tires. “If they had given us a dumpster two years ago this wouldn’t have been an issue. This isn’t about trash or tires; this is a show of force. The police are clearly trying to intimidate anyone who opposes the G-20’s policies or anyone who looks like someone that would protest the G-20” said Claire Schoyer, a fulltime Landslide volunteer.

While Landslide members are generally opposed to the G-20 and its neoliberal policies, the farm is not hosting any protesters or protest activities. Also, in the face of likely repression, the Farm has decided to scale back activities during the summit.

This is not the first time police have been at Landslide. In August, Landslide volunteers filed a complaint with the Citizens Police Review Board when two plainclothes police officers visited the farm and aggressively told volunteers that they had to leave because they were trespassing on city land. During the August incident the officers left when they were presented with tax receipts for the land.

G-20: Shock-jock yells "fire' in crowded tunnel

After weeks of the tossing of human waste referred to as the "local TV news," it is easy to become desensitized to the kind of low-budget, Hollywood, action-movie nonsense that they have been irresponsibly pushing onto an impressionable audience that these self-described "news outlets" have been known to convince several times a year that snow flurries will result in the total collapse of civilization. Following "liberal" media outlets WTAE's straight-faced blaming the City's neglect of their properties and KDKA's reliance on anonymous sources, delivered by a failing radio pundit who gets a chance to play at reporter because he is married to a news anchor, would seem to be a tough act, but local extreme-right, shock jocks have accepted the challenge.

If you got the day off, due to a rumor being spread this morning that "'G-20 protesters' intend to drive into the region's tunnels, stop a car, slash the tires, and burn it," then you were the victim of an irresponsible, dangerous hoax perpetrated by Ouinn, one half of local wing-nut radio comedians, Quinn and Rose (but enjoy your day off). This right-wing kook also maintains that "'G-20 protesters' will be throwing tear gas cannisters into retail stores," overlooking who actually possesses stockpiles of these kinds of chemical weapons and it is not the people operating community farms, mobile kitchens or writer's centers.

While these private-plane populists have both made the admirable decision to refrain from serving in the US military, the "war room" does seem like a strange name for the website of a couple of show-business types. Why so many entertainers are concerned that Barack Obama and the global elite have a good time, remains a mystery? If you visit their website and are unable to tell them apart, Jim Quinn is the one who resembles Gollum from the Lord of the Rings, dressed as one of the Golden Girls and Rose Soma-Tennent is the one swaddled in kitschy animal-prints who resembles an attempt at making a mummy (or jerky) with a tanning bed.

There is probably not anything that can be done about him, being a Clear Channel employee, but these kinds of dangerous rumors can get people hurt, especially given the local fear of tunnels.

Email the station manager to see if he feels that yelling "fire" in a crowded rush-hour tunnel is the kind of infotainment he wants to be associated with.

Pittsburgh & the Mayan Calendar

The phrase, “we are the ones we have been waiting for,” comes from the final lines of a prophetic message sent out from the Elders of the Hopi, “the People of Peace,” regarding the challenging times we are now going through. The knowledge of humanity’s risk of self-destruction as we struggle to evolve beyond greed, domination and fear was foreseen by the prophetic traditions of many Indigenous Americans, many generations ago.

So what are the ancient “2012 prophecies?” Where do they come from and what do they say about our current times? What is the predicted “new age?” What is the ancient Mayan Calendar and why is it getting such attention now, in light of these predictions of a shift of the ages? Do women have a special role in all this? Why does Pittsburgh play such an important geographic role in these prophecies and evolutionary shifts? What do Pittsburghers need to understand, and what do we need to do, to be a vital part of this grand evolutionary process? These critical issues bear further exploration.

What Are The 2012 Prophecies?

The term “2012 prophecies” has come to refer to the rich prophetic traditions of several Indigenous American peoples, such as the Hopi, Seneca, Cherokee and Maya. The 2012 date itself comes from the end date of Mayan Calendar, which represents its own prophetic system. Many tribal prophecies, some of which have been fulfilled, and some of which are still in process, correspond to the Mayan Calendar predictions through their ancient system for tracking cycles of creation.

For generations, the Indigenous peoples had to deal with the destruction of their wisdom. In order to ensure the survival of their sacred teachings, a Council of Elders of Red Nations of North, South and Central America was called 500 years ago. At that time prophetic teachings were hidden and protected by secret societies, to await a time when people would be open to hear and learn. Within the past 30 years, the tribal “spirit-ancestors directed their people to reveal these hidden teachings to those of good will who will listen,” (personal communication, 1994, Twyla Nitsch, Medicine Woman of the Seneca Wolf Clan). These prophecies are increasingly being revealed.

The earliest Native American prophesies told of the arrival of the Europeans, their cultural domination, and the near destruction by White people of native ways and wisdom of living in harmony with Earth. Their prophesies foretold a time of increasing darkness, as materialism would replace ethics, and technological and material developments would bring levels of pollution and imbalance such that our future survival would be at stake.

Finally, high-tech cultures are beginning to seriously scrutinize our “progress.” Are we really progressing? We are living an interesting paradox: the progression of the Western-led industrial, technological and informational revolutions that have generated so many benefits, simultaneously have been creating nightmares of overwhelming problems we cannot seem to correct.

The list of complex and overwhelming problems accompanying our progress is huge. Global warming is intensifying our weather patterns and has produced hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis and droughts of incomprehensible severity. Terrorism, arms proliferation, wars, unsustainable materialism, pollution, corrupt leaders, unchecked greed, a growing gap between the rich and poor, threats of Avian flu leaping to humans, HIV-AIDS, violence and sexual abuse of women and children, serious violence perpetrated even by juveniles, economic instability, overpopulation…it is quite a chilling list.

These issues that now threaten the future of our planet are the very issues that were foreseen by many Native American tribes. The Hopi word for this condition of imbalance in which we currently find ourselves is “Koyaanisquatsi.” Their prophesies indicate that a path to survival is not guaranteed, and requires reestablishing “right relationship” with Mother Earth and all our relations, through incorporating ancient ways of living in harmony.

All of the indigenous American 2012 prophecies are similar. They all include predictions of “Earth changes,” which describe a cleansing or purging process that Mother Earth will go through, in reaction to the pollution and imbalance humans have created. This cleansing process is characterized by severe weather patterns such as increasingly intense and frequent hurricanes, earthquakes, droughts and storms, even the rising of sea levels. Many predictions include the collapse of materialism and the global economy.

According to Mayan elder Carlos Barrios, who also writes about the Mayan Calendar and their prophecies, “All of the prophesies of the world, all the traditions, are converging now. There is no time for games.” He goes on to say that the Earth changes have begun in earnest, but that the prophetic year of 2012 does not mean the end of the world, as has been sensationalized.

Based on the wisdom of the Mayan prophesies and their sophisticated calendar system, Barrios says, “the world will not end. It will be transformed.” In the new era, a “heavenly energy” will infuse the planet and assist a transition to peace, unity, love, sharing and respect. Separateness and divisiveness will end, and oneness will prevail.

Barrios explains that the Earth changes are accelerating now, and will continue. But, he emphasizes, “it is up to the people…our attitude and actions will determine how harsh or how mild they are.” In fact, these converging native prophecies call for “people of the light” to come together and unite in some way in the service of healing and survival.

Some of these prophesies say that now is the time for gathering and mobilizing women, because it is “through the voices of women that the future will be ensured.” It is a Hopi prophesy that, “When the Grandmothers speak, peace will return to the Earth, and the Earth will be healed.”

Interestingly, in 2004, “The Alliance of 13 Indigenous Grandmothers” from around the world, established their proclamation of concerns and commitments to help Mother Earth, and inspired hosts of similar wise-women gatherings across the country.

There is indeed a growing public awareness that the choices humanity makes during the next few years may well determine whether life as we know it will be able to continue flourishing on this planet Earth.

What Other World Teachings And Discoveries Align With These 2012 Prophecies?
Interestingly, these native 2012 prophecies share similarities with The Bible’s Book of Revelation; the predictions of visionaries Edgar Cayce and Nostradamus; the Mother Mary sightings at Medugorje, Yugoslavia; the Indian Vedic teachings of the Kali Yuga (the final Age of Darkness, after which we begin our return to the Golden Age of oneness with the Divine Light); the arrival of the astrological Age of Aquarius, and other world traditions. Indeed there is, as Barrios said, a convergence of prophetic thinking across all the world religions and prophetic traditions. One might discount these if considered singularly, but taken together, it cannot be wise to ignore them.

In addition, all major world religions teach of a return of their Great Ones: Jesus Christ for the Christians, the Messiah for the Jews, the Future Buddha Maitreya for the Buddhists, Kalki and Krishna for the Hindus, and the Imam Mahdi and the 12th Imam for the Muslims. The Native American peoples also have such teachings: the return of the Peacemaker for the Seneca, the Pahana (True White Brother) for the Hopi, Quetzalcoatl (a Christ-figure) for the Maya.

This predicted return of the Great Ones is seen by each of these religions as imminent. Some currently recognize the presence of an Ascended Master among us now, known as the World Teacher, the one to galvanize all people of goodwill, in all sectors of society, regardless of faith tradition. Many refer to him as “Maitreya.” His purpose is to assist humanity’s shift into oneness through sharing planetary resources to end poverty and hunger. Many others predict that, rather than a return of another Ascended Master at this time in history, humanity’s collective consciousness will shift to embody the teachings of these Masters— of love and unity with the divine. In fact, the so-called “shift of the ages” is often portrayed as the time when an activation of “Christ-consciousness”– of compassion and oneness– occurs within all people.

This “shift of the ages” addresses the astrological progression of Earth’s movement through the influence of the 12 zodiac signs in our cosmos. Each astrological age lasts approximately 2,155 years long. We are currently shifting from the astrological Age of Pisces to the Age of Aquarius. The archetypal themes of each zodiac sign are seen as informing the next developmental stage of human consciousness.

In the Piscean age, which opened 2,000 years ago with the arrival of Jesus Christ, most of humanity’s moral/emotional/spiritual evolution was in its early stages. People needed strict rules from outer authority/institutions about what to believe and how to act. During this era, people typically did not have direct access to sacred teachings, but could only receive them through religious intermediaries. With information being controlled by leaders and institutions, it unfortunately was easy to withhold or distort sacred knowledge in order to control the masses.

In the Aquarian age, humans are portrayed as shifting into our capacity for direct access to knowledge and direct experience of spiritual revelation. We are moving away from outer authority, to an inner authority aligned directly with divinity. This ascended status is seen as portrayed by the Aquarian symbol of the “Water-Bearer.” Rather than being like the fish of the Piscean Age, immersed within the waters in mass-consciousness, the individual now has mastery to contain the waters of consciousness in the sacred vessel, and carry it forth.

Debate is still occurring in astrological circles whether the Aquarian Age has begun already or not.

Our increasing ability to receive direct knowledge and spiritual experience is being supported by the internet, TV, books and media. Also, specific 20th century discoveries such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, yielding the wisdom of the Essenes, and the lost Gnostic Gospels, of Mary Magdalene, Philip, and Thomas have been a major leap in this direction. Each text reveals ways we can access spiritual mastery through direct experience rather than through institutionally controlled and prescribed doctrine. The current ease of public access to such ancient teachings and other forms of knowledge, through the internet and other sources, is like a confirmation of the shift of consciousness we are undergoing with the arrival of the age of Aquarius.

Many other ancient sources of mystical knowledge and spiritual technology, previously withheld from public access, are being revealed as well. The Kabala, or Tree Of Life, from within Judiasm; the Sufi tradition from within Islam; Kundalini yoga and Shri Vidya (the knowledge of Divine Mother) from within Hinduism are examples. Recent archeological discoveries have also emerged, demonstrating the existence of world-wide, pre-historic, peaceful, Goddess-based cultures that long outlasted our merely 5,000+ years of patriarchal culture and male dominated religions.

These discoveries triggered the women’s spirituality movement, which helped restore the feminine face of divinity to public awareness. New information about Mary Magdalene herself being the Holy Grail of the lost sacred feminine consciousness, as well as being the sacred partner of Jesus has also assisted this awareness.

With this background, we can see that we are entering a time where ancient knowledge is emerging in new ways in support of a leap of consciousness many call “ascension” or the “shift of the ages.”

Who Are The Maya And What Are Their Calendars?

The Maya were an ancient civilization whose culture flourished from 2500 BCE to 800 CE, in the area that is currently the Yucatan of Mexico, Lowland Guatemala, and Belize. They were the most advanced astronomers, mathematicians and architects of their time. Their culture influenced other Native American cultures, and was mostly destroyed by the Spanish Christians. Descendants of the ancient Maya still exist today.

The Mayan Calendar, which is actually a system of calendars, was first catapulted into public attention on August 16, 1987. It was on this date that a globally coordinated spiritual event occurred, spearheaded by author Jose Arguelles, called the Harmonic Convergence. This date was identified as pivotal in the Mayan Calendar as the beginning of a global awakening into love, unity and cooperation. Many cite this date as inaugurating the Age of Aquarius. In support of this process of shifting human consciousness, people gathered in groups at sacred sites around the world, for meditation, prayer and ceremony.

The Mayan Calendar end date of 2012 was then speculated as meaning the end of the world. However, this interpretation is not the accurate understanding. From a Mayan perspective, Earth and humanity are progressing through cycles of divinely guided evolution in consciousness. These cycles continue until 2012. Then humans will transform from limited beings, who experience ourselves as separate from the Creator/Creation, into unlimited beings aligned with the Creator/Creation, as fully conscious co-creators.

Mayan calendars were not primarily about time, but about tracking the flow of creation, identifying the intent or purpose that creation had for each day. They used their calendars to align themselves to the flow of a divine purpose or plan for humanity’s evolution. Their calendars can still be applied in this way today.

According to internationally recognized Mayan Calendar expert and author, Carl Johan Calleman, the ancient Mayan Calendar system did indeed establish “an exact science of creation,” and is scientific proof of the existence of a Divine Intelligence guiding creation (The Mayan Calendar and the Transformation of Consciousness). Calleman has determined two of these calendars, the “tun” and “tzolkin,” to be sacred calendars used as prophetic tools by the ancient Maya.

This calendar system still assists our understanding of what has been occurring and can be expected to occur next on Earth. Calleman has charted extensively how events of history– such as the arrival of new philosophies, inventions, wars, religions, economic collapses—each arrived in the Mayan calendar’s predicted timeframe, establishing particular aspects of new consciousness. These timeframes were mathematically calculated by the Maya based on their understanding of the cycles of Divine influence.

These ancient calendars elaborate a timeframe of evolution, spanning from 16.4 billion years ago, with the “Big Bang” of creation, to 2012. They chart nine “Underworlds” or levels of creation, each bringing consciousness into increased complexity and awareness. Each underworld level passes through a thirteen-stage process, of receiving alternating light and dark energy transmissions from Divine Intelligence. These Divine transmissions guide the process— seven days and six nights of creation (7 days + 6 nights = 13 stages of development) at each level.

We are familiar with the story of seven days/six nights of creation in Genesis and other religious traditions. In the Mayan version, each period of light, or “day,” brings in new developments or ideas. Each period of dark, or “night,” is a time for application or integration of the new developments, sometimes involving the collapse of the old institutions. And a Mayan “day” or “night”—rather than our modern 24-hour concept—represents a varying duration of time at each creation cycle, such as 1000 years, for example.

Each cycle then culminates in a new level of consciousness built on the foundation of the previous one. Each underworld level is twenty times faster than the previous one. If time is not speeding up, creation certainly is! So creation is still in process, and on an exact schedule. The timeframe of this creation is seen as ending either on 10/28/2011 (Calleman’s calculation), or on 12/21/2012 (the traditional Mayan calculation), because at that time we will make a huge evolutionary leap in our consciousness. Some traditions call this leap “ascension.”

The Maya had specific imagery for the source of these divine transmissions guiding our evolution. They portrayed these divine transmissions as emanating from a Universal World Tree, in the heart of the Milky Way, projecting its impulses of intelligence to our Planetary World Tree. And humans then receive the pulses of intelligence through our attunement to our planet. The World Tree imagery is present in other cultural traditions also (Judaism, the Norse and Celtic traditions, and various indigenous cultures have versions of a world tree/Tree of Life.)

The metaphor of a world tree also fits with the current scientific thinking of our universe as a hologram. If the universe is a hologram, then the whole is reflected in each of its parts.

Information is transmitted from the whole (macro-cosm), to its parts (micro-cosm). These transmissions happen in an ongoing and systematic manner through “holographic resonance,” which is an information–download process that occurs through photons of light. Quantum physics has demonstrated light’s capacity to store and transmit information via the zero-point field, an omni-present field of sub-atomic light particles (McTaggart, The Field). The Universal World Tree translates into the macro-cosm, holographically downloading its information to the micro-cosm of the Planetary World Tree and on to the human level within the planet.

So far, Earth and humans have evolved through seven of the nine Underworlds, or levels of consciousness, and we have just entered the eighth level. We have evolved through the levels of cellular, mammalian, familial, tribal, regional, national, and planetary consciousness. We began the level of galactic consciousness in 1999, which will last 12.8 years. The final level is called the universal level and is calculated to begin in 2011/2012, lasting 260 days.

How Does The Mayan Calendar Apply To Our Time In History?

Most perceive events of the current unfolding of history as alarming and grim. The reason that it doesn’t seem that humans have evolved to a higher level of consciousness is that so far, ever since “the Fall,” we entered a consciousness of duality, of perceived separation from God, each other and Earth. “The Fall,” expressed in Biblical and other cultural stories, was pinpointed by the Mayans as occurring in history 5,125 years ago. This is the time frame when the current “great creation cycle,” called the Mayan Long Count, began on August 10, 3114 BCE. This also marks the period of history when patriarchal systems of religions and national identities were organized, and written languages arose. A consciousness of domination, competition, inequality, scarcity and fear accompanied this duality perspective. And the earlier experience of the interconnected web of life began to fade. The “Wisdom–Keepers” of indigenous cultures have fortunately preserved some of this ancient knowledge.

The final, Universal Underworld level of our evolution will shift us into our divine consciousness of love and oneness in 2011/2012. But first we must complete our current development in the Galactic Underworld, which heals our duality-based consciousness.

This rebalancing of duality occurs on a human level, primarily through integrating the feminine and masculine aspects of our brain and consciousness. So, the feminine/right brain aspects of awareness and functioning (heart, feeling, nurturing, intuition, cooperation ) will increasingly integrate with the masculine/left brain awareness and functioning (mind, thinking, producing, analyzing competition) whether we are males or females. Humans will become more whole and integrated. And females will rise to truer equality with males as a result.

The healing of duality is also occurring through integrating ancient wisdom into modern technology and science, integrating spirituality and materialism. This has been reflected in the new research in Quantum physics, where the scientists themselves are experiencing spiritual opening as they learn about the zero-point field, for example.

And this balancing of duality occurs on a planetary level through the right/Eastern hemisphere of the planet coming into prominence in various ways to gain equal footing with the left/Western hemisphere. We see this occurring now through the increasing acceptance of spiritual knowledge from the East, the integration of Chinese and Vedic traditions of wholistic healing, as well as the acceleration of economic development in the East.

Why Is Pittsburgh So Central In These Prophesies And Evolutionary Shifts?
Our Pittsburgh history confirms that the Point Park area, where our three rivers converge, was a sacred site for tribal rituals of the Native Americans who inhabited this region. All indigenous cultures recognize the sacred power of any geographical area where three rivers merge. Our area is even more unique with the fourth, underground river (more accurately defined as an aquifer), that feeds the fountain, and empties into the Ohio River. The four rivers carry special significance regarding our area’s surprising connection to the origins of the Maya themselves as well as the Mayan 2012 prophesies.

Recent archeological studies conducted through the University of Pittsburgh (Adovasio, The First Americans) have confirmed that the Western Pennsylvania area of the Meadowcroft Rockshelter near Greater Pittsburgh is the area where the first Americans established themselves in permanent settlement over a 16,000-year period. These first Americans dated back to 15,000-19,000 B.C.E.

Tracking the migration of what appears to be their cultural footprints of sacred mound technology along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers into the Yucatan, one witnesses the sacred mounds evolving into the mathematically sophisticated step-pyramids typical of the Maya.

This evidence leads to an interesting conclusion. It appears that these first Americans, established in our Western Pennsylvania region, were the predecessors of the ancient Maya. If this conclusion is valid, this would link our Pittsburgh area with the Maya historically.

Returning to the significance of Pittsburgh’s converging rivers, several visionaries, healers, a Himalayan holy man, and the Dalai Lama himself have all confirmed that the Point where the rivers converge is indeed a sacred portal. Several of them have confirmed that this portal, or gateway, will soon be activated to bring forth pure universal light for our planet’s transformation.

Two of these visionaries, Nance and Frank, are from the Pittsburgh area. Together they do planetary healing and ascension work, to anchor into Earth the changes needed to facilitate our transition to the new age. According to their transmissions of guidance,

“Pittsburgh IS the “Point of Light,” the key portal of twelve such portals on sacred sites across the Earth.”

They explain that these portals are at locations in the earth’s landscape where a convergence of rivers, mountains or other geographical formations creates a mirror image of the sacred Mayan Universal World Tree, visible in the Milky Way. These Earth portals receive and transmit the holographic transmissions from the Universal World Tree at regular intervals.

In the Universal World tree within the Milky way, three rivers of stars flow in the same directions as Pittsburgh’s three rivers, and its starless area, called “the Dark Rift,” mirrors our forth, underground river. “That is what makes Pittsburgh’s portal the most accurate map of the Universal World Tree on the Earth,” Nance emphasizes. The Mayan Calendar has identified certain dates as breakthrough points, when new information from the Universal World Tree is transmitted to our Planetary World Tree. November 23, 2006 is such a significant date, which inaugurates the Mayan Fifth Day of our current creation cycle, known as the “Breakthrough to Light.” As the key portal, Pittsburgh’s Point is playing a powerful role during this period of the Mayan Fifth Day of our current cycle, disseminating new Light-transmitted information through the portal of our converging four rivers.

Nance further states that Pittsburgh’s spiritual purpose needed to be hidden until now, but by 2011-2012, Pittsburgh will be recognized globally as a spiritual powerhouse. She wants Pittsburghers to know that, “if you live in Pittsburgh, you are here for an important reason: to witness, nurture, and transmit the pure incoming light of this universal portal. Being aware of the legacy of our ancient landscape is crucial in the evolution of consciousness of this planet and our species at this time.”

Another visionary/ healer, Edemir Rossi from Brazil, echoes these insights. His perception is that Pittsburgh is an “alchemical city.” He sees the collective spiritual energy here, previously dormant, as now awakening and ready to ascend and transform the region from dense coal-consciousness into enlightened diamond-consciousness. A Himalayan holy man and Shri Vidya master from India, Babaji, recently visited Pittsburgh. His meditations, guidance and visions validated this assessment of the spiritual significance of our city and the importance of the Point.

Meanwhile, the contemporary Maya are keeping their count of days, marked in 20-day cycles, when Earth receives the progressive doses of cosmic information arriving through the “harmonic resonance” of divine transmission. Marker dates, such as November 23.2006 are meant to be celebrated. But the BIG date we are preparing for according to the Maya is December 21– the Solstice– of 2012. At that time, our sun will move into alignment with the heart of the Milky Way to create a cosmic cross, seen to be an embodiment of the World Tree.

And our Earth will align with the center of the galaxy. It is this alignment, occurring once every 26,000 years, which is understood as opening the channel for a higher level of cosmic energy to flow to Earth, bringing us into an ascended consciousness.

What Can Pittsburghers (and anyone else) Do To Be A Vital Part Of This Grand Planetary Evolutionary Shift?

We must grasp this central message, Carl Calleman emphasized in a phone interview with this writer: “Based on empirical research we can conclude that there is an exact divine plan that is driving the consciousness of humanity to a state of oneness, where there are no filters between humans and the divine…into a cosmic level of consciousness…into our full unlimited potential.”
Echoing Nance and Frank’s call, Carlos Barrios urges that we “need to reactivate the energy of sacred places. That is our work.” Go to these sacred places (the Point is ours!) and visualize the spread of the incoming pure healing light. Do this both alone and in groups.

As Mayan leader Carlos Barrios reminds us, our attitudes and choices will determine how harsh the Earth changes will be. So each person is being called to do her/his part, inwardly and outwardly.

Do personal psychological work to release the grip of fear-based conditioning that generates anxiety, anger, greed, and negative judgement, which entrap you in the perception of separation. Such work is not self-absorbed, but adds to the larger pool of healing and awareness. Find a therapist who is spiritually attuned.

Meditation, prayer and spiritual practice are vital inner grounding for these changes. Allow your heart to direct you to a tradition with deep roots. A daily practice is recommended. Finding a yoga or meditation class, or spiritual guidance can help.

It is important not to identify with the surface appearance of reality. The old institutional and personality structures based in duality and fear must collapse to make way for new structures based in higher consciousness. Much transformation is occurring beneath the surface.
Become an activist. Elect leaders who will take action to share resources and protect the Earth.

Be mindful of your own connection to the Earth. Join your actions with like-minded others.
Cultivate a heart focus, centered in love, respect, tolerance, sharing, gratitude, compassion and forgiveness. Continuously redirect fear-based, limiting thoughts.

If you are a woman, find ways to gather with other women of heart and vision to reclaim and integrate the sacred feminine. Men of heart can assist this process as well.

Develop your intuition. The mind as we have known it will become too limited of a tool for negotiating the rapid changes that will arise. Intuition is our next survival tool, which comes through cultivating an ongoing flow of connection to the source, to the divine.

Participate in Deeksha, which are divine energy transfers that activate each individual’s enlightenment process. This increases the overall level of planetary enlightenment. (See resource list)

Participate in Transmission Meditation, a service meditation which allows individuals to transmit higher energies through their chakras so that these energies may be directed by the Masters of Wisdom to where they are most needed on Earth. Amazing spiritual transformation is the side-effect of this service. (See resource list)

Go to Pittsburgh, Young Man, and Defy Your Empire

Globalization and unfettered capitalism have been swept into the history books along with the open-market theory of the 1920s, the experiments of fascism, communism and the New Deal. It is time for a new economic and political paradigm. It is time for a new language to address our reality. The voices of change, those who speak in powerful and yet unfamiliar words, will cry out Sept. 25 and 26 in Pittsburgh when protesters from around the country gather to defy the heads of state, bankers and finance ministers from the world’s 22 largest economies who are convening for a meeting of the G-20. If we heed these dissident voices we have a future. If we do not we will commit collective suicide.

The international power elites will go to Pittsburgh to preach the mantra that globalization is inevitable and eternal. They will discuss a corpse as if it was living. They will urge us to remain in suspended animation and place our trust in the inept bankers and politicians who orchestrated the crisis. This is the usual tactic of bankrupt elites clinging to power. They denigrate and push to the margins the realists—none of whom will be inside their security perimeters—who give words to our disintegration and demand a new, unfamiliar course. The powerful discredit dissent and protest. But human history, as Erich Fromm wrote, always begins anew with disobedience. This disobedience is the first step toward freedom. It makes possible the recovery of reason.

The longer we speak in the language of global capitalism, the longer we utter platitudes about the free market—even as we funnel hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars into the accounts of large corporations—the longer we live in a state of collective self-delusion. Our power elite, who profess to hate government and government involvement in the free market, who claim they are the defenders of competition and individualism, have been stealing hundreds of billions of dollars of our money to nationalize mismanaged corporations and save them from bankruptcy. We hear angry and confused citizens, their minds warped by hate talk radio and television, condemn socialized medicine although we have become, at least for corporations, the most socialized nation on Earth. The schizophrenia between what we profess and what we actually embrace has rendered us incapable of confronting reality. The longer we speak in the old language of markets, capitalism, free trade and globalization the longer the entities that created this collapse will cannibalize the nation.

What are we now? What do we believe? What economic model explains the irrationality of looting the U.S. Treasury to permit speculators at Goldman Sachs to make obscene profits? How can Barack Obama’s chief economic adviser, Lawrence Summers, tout a “jobless recovery”? How much longer can we believe the fantasy that global markets will replace nation states and that economics will permit us to create a utopian world where we will all share the same happy goals? When will we denounce the lie that globalization fosters democracy, enlightenment, worldwide prosperity and stability? When we will we realize that unfettered global trade and corporate profit are the bitter enemies of freedom and the common good?

Corporations are pushing through legislation in the United States that will force us to buy defective, for-profit health insurance, a plan that will expand corporate monopolies and profits at our expense and leave tens of millions without adequate care. Corporations are blocking all attempts to move to renewable and sustainable energy to protect the staggering profits of the oil, natural gas and coal industries. Corporations are plunging us deeper and deeper as a nation into debt to feed the permanent war economy and swell the military budget, which consumes half of all discretionary spending. Corporations use lobbyists and campaign contributions to maintain arcane tax codes that offer them tax havens and tax evasions. Corporations are draining the treasury while the working class sheds jobs, sees homes foreclosed and struggles to survive in a new and terrifying global serfdom. This has been the awful price of complacency.

Protests will begin several days before the summit. Many of the activities are being coordinated by Pittsburgh’s Thomas Merton Center. There will be a march Sept. 25 for anyone who, as Jessica Benner of the center’s Antiwar Committee stated, “has lost a job, a home, a loved one to war, lost value to a retirement plan, gotten sick from environmental pollution, or lived without adequate healthcare, water, or food. … ” There will be at least three tent cities, in addition to a Music Camp beginning Sept. 18 that will be situated at the South Side Riverfront Park near 18th Street. Unemployed workers will set up one tent city at the Monumental Baptist Church on Sept. 20 and five days later will march on the Convention Center. The encampment and the march are being organized by the Bail Out the People Movement. The Institute for Policy Studies, The Nation magazine, the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America, Pittsburgh United and other organizations will host events including a panel on corporate globalization featuring former World Bank President Joseph Stiglitz, along with a “People’s Tribunal.” There will be a religious procession calling for social justice and a concert organized by Students for a Democratic Society.

But expect difficulties. The Secret Service has so far denied protesters permits while it determines the size of the “security perimeter” it will impose around the world leaders. Pittsburgh has contracted to bring in an extra 4,000 police officers at an estimated cost of $9.5 million. Activist groups have reported incidents of surveillance and harassment. The struggle to thwart the voices of citizens will be as fierce as the struggle to amplify the voices of the criminal class that is trashing the world’s economy. These elites will appear from behind closed doors with their communiqués and resolutions to address us in their specialized jargon of power and expertise. They will attempt to convince us they have not lost control. They will make recommitments to free-trade agreements from the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, or GATT, the World Trade Organization and NAFTA, which have all thrust a knife into the backs of the working class. They will insist that the world can be managed and understood exclusively through their distorted lens of economics. But their day is over. They are the apostles of a dead system. They maintain power through fraud and force. Do not expect them to go without a struggle. But they have nothing left to say to us.

“Those who profess to favour freedom, yet deprecate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground,” Frederick Douglass wrote. “They want rain without thunder and lightening. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.”

If you can, go to Pittsburgh. This is an opportunity to defy the titans of the corporate state and speak in words that describe our reality. The power elite fear these words. If these words seep into the population, if they become part of our common vernacular, the elite and the systems they defend will be unmasked. Our collective self-delusion will be shattered. These words of defiance expose the lies and crimes the elite use to barrel us toward neofeudalism. And these words, when they become real, propel men and women to resist.

“The end of something often resembles the beginning,” the philosopher John Ralston Saul wrote in “Voltaire’s Bastards.” “More often than not our nose-to-the-glass view makes us believe that the end we are living is in fact a new beginning. This confusion is typical of an old civilization’s self-confidence—limited by circumstances and by an absence of memory—and in many ways resembling the sort often produced by senility. Our rational need to control understanding and therefore memory has simply accentuated the confusion. … Nothing seems more permanent than a long-established government about to lose power, nothing more invincible than a grand army on the morning of its annihilation.”

G20 likely to lay siege to Pittsburgh

There are numerous articles gushing over the decision to allow the global elite to gather in Pittsburgh, that speak of a vague "benefit" for the City and its residents. If other recent gatherings of the "masters of the universe" are any indication, unless you are employed by a hotel or an escort service or some other high-end tourism or security industry, all the average Pittsburgher will likely get out it is the inconvenience of closed streets, checkpoints, armored personnel carriers, protests in the streets, and the occasional whiff of stray tear gas.

Before the most recent G20 summit, London residents who were living near the ExCeL center where the summit was held, were required to carry two forms of ID, to get to their homes:

Residents at the western end of the ExCeL estate will have difficulty accessing their homes, whether by vehicle or on foot, because of road closures at the site and also with searching and screening taking place. They will be required to carry two forms of identification/proof of address (one of which must be photographic) to gain entry through security cordons.
Residents in surrounding areas will not be required to carry ID unless they are planning to travel into the ExCeL estate for work.

This should be less of a problem for Pittsburgh since in 2008 only 2,148 people actually lived in the Golden Triangle which was likely a consideration in our City being selected for this event.

The David L Lawrence Convention Center was likely selected for having water on one side, like the London site did. During the period of regular street demonstrations against the crusade in Iraq, the Convention Center was rumored to be used a temporary detention center in the event of mass arrests even larger than the122 protesters taken into custody, but that probably won't work for this one.

Many local business will be closed and boarded up for the duration, and while the federal government will foot most of the bill for turning the City into an armed camp, it has not been determined who will pay for the inevitable lawsuits, should another police riot break out. The Martin Luther King, Jr. East Busway is very close to the proposed site for the G20 and transit service will likely be negatively impacted. How is any of this "beneficial"?

Since the G20 is comprised of unaccountable people who are largely responsible for the recent global economic crisis, extreme measures will be taken to ensure that the voices of those affected by it will not be heard. Infiltrators will be used to provoke and entrap dissenters and it's a safe bet to expect preemptive arrests and raids on the homes of local activists, as well as a flurry of sensational media coverage and statements from public officials intended to demonize anyone who happens to oppose closed meetings that have a negative impact on the rest of us.

London's Tory mayor, Boris "The Menace" Johnson, used his column in the Daily Telegraph to demonize and ridicule those opposed to these kinds of undemocratic institutions. Many people await the Boy Mayor's babbling on the subject with baited breath.

This type of coverage ensures that law enforcement will likely be whipped into a frenzy, over equipped and under trained, as the London police allege they were. David Gilbertson, a retired Scotland Yard police official, fears that policing in the UK has "morphed into a faux US-style operation" and:

Officers are trained to be on guard against attack, to regard every situation, no matter how seemingly benign, as a threat situation. The lesson is that the public are your enemy. That mindset appeared to dominate at the G20 protests.

The frightening part is that London, like the rest of Western Europe, enjoys a much higher tolerance for street protests than we do in the US.
