Scientists today lined up to air their fears over a genome pioneer's claims that he has created artificial life in the laboratory.
In a world first, which has alarmed many, maverick biologist and billionaire entrepreneur Craig Venter, built a synthetic cell from scratch.
The creation of the new life form, which has been nicknamed 'Synthia', paves the way for customised bugs that could revolutionise healthcare and fuel production, according to its maker.
But there are fears that the research, detailed in the journal Science, could be abused to create the ultimate biological weapon, or that one mistake in a lab could lead to millions being wiped out by a plague, in scenes reminiscent of the Will Smith film I Am Legend.
While some hailed the research as 'a defining moment in the history of biology', others attacked it as 'a shot in the dark', with 'unparalleled risks'. The team involved have been accused of 'playing God' and tampering 'with the essence of life'.
Dr Venter created the lifeform by synthesising a DNA code and injecting it into a single bacteria cell. The cell containing the man-made DNA then grew and divided, creating a hitherto unseen lifeform.
Kenneth Oye, a social scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the U.S., said: 'Right now, we are shooting in the dark as to what the long-term benefits and long-term risks will be.'
Pat Mooney, of the ETC group, a technology watchdog with a special interest in synthetic biology, said: 'This is a Pandora's box moment - like the splitting of the atom or the cloning of Dolly the sheep, we will all have to deal with the fall-out from this alarming experiment.'
Dr David King, of the Human Genetics Alert watchdog, said: 'What is really dangerous is these scientists' ambitions for total and unrestrained control over nature, which many people describe as 'playing God'.
'Scientists' understanding of biology falls far short of their technical capabilities. We have learned to our cost the risks that gap brings, for the environment, animal welfare and human health.'
Professor Julian Savulescu, an Oxford University ethicist, said: 'Venter is creaking open the most profound door in humanity's history, potentially peeking into its destiny.
'He is not merely copying life artificially or modifying it by genetic engineering. He is going towards the role of God: Creating artificial life that could never have existed.'
He said the creation of the first designer bug was a step towards 'the creation of living beings with capacities and a nature that could never have naturally evolved'. The risks were 'unparalleled',' he added.
And he warned: 'This could be used in the future to make the most powerful bioweapons imaginable. The challenge is to eat the fruit without the worm.'
Dr Venter, who was instrumental in sequencing the human genome, had previously succeeded in transplanting one bug's genome - its entire cache of DNA - into another bacterium, effectively changing its species.
He has taken this one step further, transplanting not a natural genome but a man-made one. To do this, he read the DNA of Mycoplasma mycoides, a bug that infects goats, and recreated it piece by piece.
The fragments were then 'stitched together' and inserted into a bacterium from a different species.
There, it sprang to life, allowing the bug to grow and multiply, producing generations that were entirely artificial.
The transferred DNA contained around 850 genes - a fraction of the 20,000 or so contained in a human's genetic blueprint.
In future, bacterial 'factories' could be set up to manufacture artificial organisms designed for specific tasks such as medicines or producing clean biofuels.
The technology could also be harnessed to create environmentally friendly bugs capable of mopping up carbon dioxide or toxic waste.
Dr Venter, a 63-year-old Vietnam War veteran known for his showman tendencies, said last night: 'We are entering a new era where we're limited mostly by our imaginations.'
But the breakthrough, which took 15 years and £27.7million to achieve, opens an ethical Pandora's box. Ethicists said he is 'creaking open the most profound door in humanity's history' - with unparalleled risks.
Dr Venter, whose team of 20 scientists includes a Nobel laureate, likens the process to booting-up a computer.
Like a program without a hard drive, the DNA doesn't do anything by itself. But, when the software is loaded into the computer - in this case the second bacterium - amazing things are possible, he said.
Now that the scientist, whose J Craig Venter Institute has labs in California and Maryland, has proved the concept, the path is open for him to alter the 'recipe' to create any sort of organism he chooses.
At the top of his wishlist are bugs capable of producing clean biofuels and of sucking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. Other possibilities include designer microbes that can mop up oil slicks or generate huge quantities of drugs, including the flu vaccine.
Any such organisms would be deliberately 'crippled' so that they cannot survive outside the lab, he claimed.
Brushing aside the ethical concerns of his work, Dr Venter wrote in his autobiography that it would allow 'a new creature to enter the world'.
'We have often been asked if this will be a step too far,' he said. 'I always reply that - so far at least - we are only reconstructing a diminished version of what is out there in nature.'
Last night, he claimed the breakthrough had changed his views on the definition of life. 'We have ended up with the first synthetic cell powered and controlled by a synthetic chromosome and made from four bottles of chemicals,' he said.
'It is pretty stunning when you just replace the DNA software in a cell and the cell instantly starts reading that new software and starts making a whole new set of proteins, and within a short while all the characteristics of the first species disappear and a new species emerges.
'That's a pretty important change in how we approach and think about life.'

These range from the mundanely practical - how will this be useful? - to the profoundly philosophical - will we have to redefine what life is?
Depending on your viewpoint, it is either a powerful testament to human ingenuity or a terrible example of hubris - and the first step on a very dangerous road.
To understand what this development means, we need to discover who the team behind this innovation is.
It is led by Craig Venter, the world's greatest scientific provocateur, a 63-year-old Utah-born genius, a Vietnam veteran, billionaire, yachtsman, and an explorer. Above all he is a showman.
A master of self-publicity, he does not do things by halves; he led the private team which competed with scores of publicly funded scientists in the U.S. and UK to 'crack' the human genome by sequencing our DNA.
His rapid, innovative approach led to the possibility he would beat the scientific establishment.
So, to save face all round, the human genome was presented as a joint achievement. At around the same time, he began talking about making an artificial lifeform in the lab.
Not a Frankenstein's monster, or even a mouse, but a bacterium, one of the simplest living organisms. His blueprint was to be an unassuming and harmless little germ with only 485 genes (humans have around 25,000).
Venter talks grandly of a supercharged biotech revolution, with synthetic bacteria designed to produce biofuels, to mine precious metals from rocks and industrial waste, to digest oil slicks and render toxic spills harmless.
Scientists could even create bacteria which can produce novel drugs and vaccines, or organisms engineered to live on Mars and other planets.
The potential is huge - but so are the dangers. An artificial species, created in the lab, might not 'obey the rules' of the natural world - after all, every living being on Earth has evolved over three billion years, when a myriad of competing species have had to share the same increasingly crowded environment.
It is possible to imagine a synthetic microbe going on the rampage, perhaps wiping out all the world's crop plants or even humanity itself.
Synthetic biology also challenges our most cherished notions of what life itself actually is. Non-scientists might not realise that we have, as yet, no proper definition of life.
A diamond is not alive; a baboon clearly is. But what about a virus? Viruses, which are even simpler than bacteria, have a genetic code written in DNA (or its cousin RNA).
The stuff viruses are made from is the stuff of life - protein coats and so on - yet they cannot reproduce independently.
Like diamonds, they can be grown into crystals - and you certainly cannot crystallise baboons. Most biologists say viruses are not alive, and that true biology begins with bacteria.
So is Synthia, Venter's tentative name for his new critter, alive? It is certainly not the result of Darwinian evolution, one of the (many) definitions of life. It is more 'alive' than any virus but it is the product of Man, not of evolution. Its genetic code is simple enough to be stored on a computer (but then again, so is ours).
Whatever the answer to this fundamental question, Venter's breakthrough is certainly the final rebuttal to the old notion of a vital spark - a mysterious essence that divides the quick from the dead. If you can carry around a genome on a computer memory stick and make a cell using a few simple chemicals, then the old idea of 'vitalism' is truly dead.
Of course, this is early days. It is not yet clear if Venter can negotiate the final step - creating a whole cell from scratch, using no bits of existing living organisms at all
His bacterium is likely to be weak and feeble; we are a long way from synthetic super-plagues, and even further from an artificial animal or plant. But it is hard to escape the feeling that a boundary has been crossed. The problem is, it is far from clear where we go from here.

A third gave an e-mail address where people can write once they crack the code and the fourth listed three philosophical quotes.

Then a mere three years later he stunned the scientific establishment by revealing the first complete genome of a free-living organism that causes childhood ear infections and meningitis.
In 2005 he founded the private company Synthetic Genomics, with the aim of engineering new life forms the would produce alternative fuels.
He was listed on Time Magazine's 100 list of the most influential people in both 2007and 2008

BP and their corporate cohorts developed a lab-created, synthetic virus that infected the microbial bacteria which created a specific genome to enhance the oil recovery by among other things breaking down the oils viscosity thus increasing the flow, crude oil in its natural form is very thick and this microbial bacteria genome would break down its viscosity and make it flow much easier thus improving the amount of oil that could be recovered... This is why they have made sure that all the hurricanes this year have avoided hitting the Gulf of Mexico, dont you think it is odd that all the hurricanes stayed out of the Gulf of Mexico region this year? This is a 90 minute video time lapsed to the 15 minute time constraints imposed by Youtube. If it is to jerky I will remove it and reupload it in a series of real time videos. There are allot of bizarre things happening in this video! In the upper right corner I can see what looks like the face of a baby! Then below that is the oil transformed into some type of a creature that is gnawing on the steel! You can see its claws/teeth on the side/edge of that cut out portion! BP and their corporate cohorts developed a lab-created, synthetic virus that infected the microbial bacteria which created a specific genome to enhance the oil recovery by among other things breaking down the oils viscosity thus increasing the flow, crude oil in its natural form is very thick and this microbial bacteria genome would break down its viscosity and make it flow much easier thus improving the amount of oil that could be recovered... It is computer programmed to self replicate quickly and it is virus like, replicating through host cells and is self mutating. Then they gave it a little tweak to make it degrade the oil that was gushing into the Gulf of Mexico! Now "SYNTHIA" is completely out of control!
There is no known predators, so it can reproduce without limit. It is computer programmed to rapidly adjust in any environment. It is made to be antibiotic resistant, and it has gotten totally and entirely out of control. The Gulf BLUE PLAGUE is Evolving
I have been interviewing family and friends who live along the Gulf of Mexico coast in Louisiana and Mississippi. Many of them had been working on shrimp boats before May 1, 2010 and a cousin is a shrimp boat owner. I have also spoken at length with two RN's working at a Gulf coast Emergency Room and an Emergency Clinic who are close family friends. I am basing what follows on their observations and knowledge along with my own personal research.
A cousin who owns his own shrimp boat was hired by BP to assist with oil boom and cleanup operations. Other family members were also hired and have been his crew while undertaking BP boom and cleanup assistance operations. They were all forced to sign agreements not to publicly speak about their work or anything about BP operations. Their legal agreements do not mention anything about speaking openly to their families.
STAGE ONE: THE BLUE FLU a/k/a BP Flu
Every one of those working on the shrimp boat have suffered from flu-like symptoms since the end of May, 2010. This includes migraine headaches, eye aches, joint aches, ear aches, severe coughing bouts, fevers, vomiting, and swollen glands (especially in the neck). These same symptoms are being seen in the coastal ER's as well. But as family and the RN's have confirmed, these symptoms are not caused by any viral flu. This is not the same as the Asian Flu or any other viral flu bug. These symptoms are directly caused by a lack of oxygen due to airborne chemicals and toxic gases.
Most family members who work and live further inland have not yet encountered these symptoms since their jobs are indoors where recirculating air conditioning systems isolate them from constant outdoor air exposure. They also drive to/from work with the recirculating A/C system on to keep cool. The same applies when they are in their air conditioned homes. But those who do work outdoors 10-20 miles inland have recently experienced many of the same flu-like symptoms as those in the family who are working on the boats.
According to the ER nurses, in the southern Mississippi and Louisiana areas there have been more than 600 cases of what their staffs have appropriately named the "BP flu". The vast majority of these "flu" cases are with those people who are working along the coast, as well as further offshore, on boats; and those who live along the southernmost areas along the Gulf of Mexico. One might initially think - based on mainstream media reports - that these flu-like symptoms are nothing to be overly concerned about. This is not a matter of 'take two aspirins and call me in the morning'. Nothing could be further from the truth.
As reported by researchers at Columbia Univ.'s National Center for Disaster Preparedness (NCDP) in late July 2010, more than 40 percent of adults living within ten miles of the coast say they have experienced direct exposure to the oil spill or clean-up effort. Within this group, nearly 40 percent reported physical symptoms of skin irritations and respiratory problems.
CYANOSIS: OXYGEN STARVATION
Along with the symptoms that mimic flu-like viruses, there are increasing cases of severe symptomatic cyanosis. These rapidly increasing symptoms range from bluish lip color to numbness in fingers and toes. There is also a fast growing increase of pneumonia cases which are being diagnosed as chemical induced pneumonia. Those working on boats and those living directly on the coast are the most effected.
Cyanosis is simply oxygen starvation in the blood. With a moderate case involving such a lack of oxygen, the skin appears to have a blueish colour. Hands and fingers especially show these signs as will other extremities such as toes and lips. A lack of oxygen in the blood can also have a purplish appearance where the skin surface is red from sun exposure but the blood beneath the skin is blue. Red and blue make purple.
If all these BLUE FLU symptoms were temporary, most everyone suffering from them would eventually recover as the blood becomes increasingly oxygenated once removed from the oxygen depletion source. Short term exposure and biological complications to gases and chemicals that starve the air and lungs from oxygen, creating cyanosis, are usually reversible. However, long term exposure is not fully reversible. Long term exposure depends on how depleted the air is of oxygen and how much time a person has been exposed to that condition.
OXYGEN DEPLETED WATER AND AIR
The same goes for oxygen levels in water. Fish, turtles, and crustaceans (shrimp and lobsters) die quickly when oxygen levels have been depleted. Dolphins and whales are mammals and they depend on surface water air to breathe their oxygen. Since May 2010, there has been an epidemic of dead fish, turtles, dolphins, sharks and whales in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The mainstream media has failed to report this truth. As someone who works closely with other animal rescue and wildlife rehabilitation services throughout the southeast, I have been told there are very few turtles or marine animals being rescued because the majority are already dead when found.
It's more than obvious that the water in the northern Gulf of Mexico is severely depleted of oxygen. This also applies to the surface air that dolphins and whales - as well as people - depend on to breathe.
In May 2010, tests done by various research vessels in the northern Gulf of Mexico showed a 30-60% decrease in oxygen levels. This was three long months ago. This surely accounts for the vast fish kills. But when you combine lethal chemicals - such as Corexit - along with oil and gas by-products from large plumes of oil hidden deep in the Gulf, the problem is yet in its initial stages. As the algae naturally attacks these chemicals, oil and gases, a further oxygen depletion occurs. It's nature's way of attempting to correct the problem. The result of that natural process is severe oxygen depletion.
STAGE TWO: THE BLUE PLAGUE
While the Blue Flu symptoms are increasing for more and more people, those who have had 30+ days of direct exposure to the toxic and oxygen depleted Gulf air and water are in immediate danger of permanent and irreversible biological damage... if not death.
How humans and animals biologically react to cyanosis depends on the severity of exposure and time of exposure. At first, the body will compensate as best it can. But sooner or later, the body is overcome and severe complications begin. Without enough oxygen, the body will begin to rot and die from the inside out. The outward signs can be numbness in extremities, swollen necks and throats, blue lips, dark purple tongues, blue or gray skin colour, and even bloodshot eyes as the body attempts to filter out the toxins. Lymph nodes and adenoids are overburdened.
But these outward signs are the result of severe inward problems. Left exposed to a lack of oxygen, the kidneys and liver will fail and shut down. Heart failure is next. It's the same as someone who has decided to commit suicide by carbon monoxide depletion of oxygen in a locked garage with their car running. They die from cyanosis, the lack of oxygen. People living and working along the northern Gulf coast will eventually die the same way if exposed to depleted oxygen levels long enough.
NO END IN SIGHT
The oil and gas from the Biloxi Dome area has not stopped flowing. It's an oil exploration well which blew out on or about February 13, 2010 so severely that it deposited the Blow Out Preventer (BOP) and the steel well casing hundreds of yards away on the ocean floor. There is nothing there to cap or abate the oil flow with. It's an open hole that is nothing less than an oil, gas and tar volcano. While a certain leaking BP well may have been capped seven miles northeast of the Biloxi Dome area, an already large underwater lake of oil at an approximate 3,000 foot depth is rapidly growing each hour. It's estimated 9 mile length in May 2010 is surely dwarfed in size now.
Don't be fooled by the lack of surface oil being reported by the mainstream media shills and BP. Corexit hides what is beneath and Corexit is more toxic than crude oil itself. The only people denying the existence of the underwater plumes are the people at BP. And they offer no evidence to contradict the extremely solid evidence provided by four universities, including LSU, of the existence of these huge underwater plumes of oil.
The BLUE PLAGUE Spreads
Just because you don't live on the Gulf coast, don't think the Blue Plague won't come your way. As more gas, oil and tar fills the Gulf of Mexico from the Biloxi Dome area, more toxins are released into the water and the air.
Evaporation, storms, and hurricanes will spread the continually increasing oil-chemical-gas toxins inland. Certain areas may experience more severe exposure than those living on the Gulf coast. In concentrated amounts, it will be as acid rain that has washed and destroyed your crops, trees or grass. It will enter streams, lakes, and underground water sources. Fish, mammals, and animals will die just as they have in and along the Gulf coast. Potable water and food will be effected. The air will be effected. The Blue Plague will grow as more airborne and cloud-filled toxins spread the Gulf oil and gas lakes beneath the surface inland.
If you don't believe this is happening now or will never happen in your home town in the future, then just keep your face buried in your HDTV screen and keep the beer flowing while you watch NASCAR races and Dr. Phil. But if you have decided the mainstream media is not telling you the truth, then wake up and smell the roses. The true health effects on humans will only begin to surface years from now and this includes proven carcinogenic cancers.
The Blue Flu may be all that most will have to endure because of the spewing oil volcano in the Gulf of Mexico, but don't bet your life on avoiding the Blue Plague.

On May 4, National Geographic asked if the "Gulf Oil Spill (was) a 'Dead Zone in the Making,' " saying if it can't be contained it could happen.
An early August [2010] update explained that beneath the surface lies:

I believe we are seeing some of the Blue Flu in Florida, east coast here. The vulnerable people, like the elderly, are having breathing difficulties and ending up on steroids and O2. But others are reporting headaches, coughing, hives, congestion, burning eyes, etc. People think there's no oil in the water. I keep telling people it is not what's in the water, but what's in the air. We are only 150 miles from the Gulf as the crow flies. This is not rocket science. Even my pets don't want to go out in it.

I am living in this toxic soup. Yes I do know it is toxic, my dogs won't play outside anymore either, and I am sick a lot of the time with what you think is the beginning of a cold or flu but it subsides enough in between to prove it otherwise. BP needs to be held accountable, and quit the lying and murdering of people and animals. We need to wake up, and kick their ass. For those who have comments supporting BP, please eat the fish from the gulf (what's left of them), you can vacation down here, and swim in the gulf. You can even stay at my home for free. If you really believe they are not covering the truth up, and lying about what they really haven't done, please eat some fish, breathe the fresh sea air deeply, and have a good nights sleep.

Here in the Missouri area many or most trees are now showing severe strain. Especially along highways where there is also high concentrations of ozone pollution already, the trees have gone in to their falls color in August when the normal timing is October or November in Missouri. Trees take on their fall colors because of decreasing sunlight or environmental factors. We know that it's not decreasing sunlight so that ONLY leaves the latter. This is NOT just limited to trees. Many plants are also dying with leaves shriveled or burned or displaying large holes "burned" in them and the surrounding leaf decaying as a result. The media shills have all but laid on the puke that "BP Kept us safe after 9/11. Why do you Hate America! Do you want the terrorists to win?" and have worked hand in hand to completely remove the Gulf story from any and all MSM information streams. They want you to believe that it's now nothing more than another crackpot conspiracy theory that a "spill" happened at all. And have remained consistent with describing it as a "spill" as if it were a glass of milk on the kitchen counter that had been knocked over in order to make sure as to minimize the seriousness of this in order to keep the Patriotards mouthing "Drill Baby Drill!"

Government Officials Have NO CREDIBILITY
I have been in the Gulf since May 3 and have witnessed the outbreak of a public-health epidemic as the oil and dispersant came ashore. Every day now, former workers, Gulf coast residents, and visitors share similar stories with me of respiratory problems, central nervous system problems, chemical sensitivities, or bad skin rashes after exposure to air or water in the Gulf -- predictable illnesses from chemical exposure, all of which were avoidable given adequate warning and protection.
Stories of illnesses persist despite assurances from four federal agencies -- the Environmental Protection Agency, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and the U.S. Coast Guard -- that no levels of oil or dispersant measured in Gulf water or air were found to be unsafe.
But government officials have no credibility in communities across the Gulf because the official story does not match the reality of what people are seeing and smelling. The community stories that string together across the Gulf coast paint a picture quite different from what BP, its contractors, and our government report.
BP has already stated that it is "not responsible" for any long-term effects from its dispersant experiment. Unless American seafood consumers want to be part of the Gulf experiment, I suggest we all support our fishermen -- and not trust the federal government to warn us about seafood safety.

I have a small garden in Central NY which I believe is showing signs of damage. It has been raining up here almost nonstop for the past two weeks. My organically grown and fertilized cucumber plants went from green, healthy and producing to dead in three days. My collard greens are turning yellow with burnt, crispy edges, and the squash plants are yellowing with tiny spots. Tomato plants have sections of dead foliage. Decorative plants and flowers are also damaged. Some of the foliage on the trees is dying, not the entire tree, just sections. Other trees seem to be turning slightly yellow, and there are big brown dead spots on some of the leaves. The water tastes acrid, and I am filtering it with a Berkey water filter. I don't know if the Berkey will take out the Corexit chemicals, but I hope so. My other concern is how to filter the water we use to bathe, do laundry, wash dishes, etc. Is there any way to chemically cause the water to become safe, some kind of chemical reaction with other substances that will render the toxins harmless? As far as oxygenating the water, food grade hydrogen peroxide might be a possibility, or the John Ellis water machine.

I'm in Austin, and after the first named storm of the season (Alex), which came up into Texas bringing heavy rains from directly over the spill, my cucumbers and my corn plants died within 3 days. Tomatoes (varieties bred for the heat) developed severe blotches, watermelons grew but were stunted. I also developed a rash and my eyes burned like crazy. It's dissipated now, and the tomato plants have recovered. When I mention the possibility of acid rain from the gulf, people tell me I'm paranoid. I have a hard time dealing with the apathy - one neighbor told me he has "worse things to worry about" and a couple friends told me to stop sending them all the downer stuff. I don't like it either, but I'd rather know than NOT know.

My parents just moved to Florida and within about 8-10 days of being down there, their two big dogs got really sick with respiratory problems and had to go to the vet. The vet gave them each a shot (I don't know of what) and pills and antibiotics. This is near Sarasota, Fla. I wonder how other people's pets are faring in these areas.

I'm here in midtown Manhattan and we've had the same foliage- Agent Orange defoliation symptoms all over the city since the Hurricane Alex rain. NO ONE is onto this, although it all around us on every dtreet corner. Drooping plants, holes, burns, residue poweder in a raindrop shape.
Anyone suggest a lab to send these plants for analysis that is not $1000s to be tested? No wonder Wall St has been betting on famine and mass food shortages.

The Gulf BLUE PLAGUE is Evolving
I have been interviewing family and friends who live along the Gulf of Mexico coast in Louisiana and Mississippi. Many of them had been working on shrimp boats before May 1, 2010 and a cousin is a shrimp boat owner. I have also spoken at length with two RN's working at a Gulf coast Emergency Room and an Emergency Clinic who are close family friends. I am basing what follows on their observations and knowledge along with my own personal research.
A cousin who owns his own shrimp boat was hired by BP to assist with oil boom and cleanup operations. Other family members were also hired and have been his crew while undertaking BP boom and cleanup assistance operations. They were all forced to sign agreements not to publicly speak about their work or anything about BP operations. Their legal agreements do not mention anything about speaking openly to their families.
STAGE ONE: THE BLUE FLU a/k/a BP Flu
Every one of those working on the shrimp boat have suffered from flu-like symptoms since the end of May, 2010. This includes migraine headaches, eye aches, joint aches, ear aches, severe coughing bouts, fevers, vomiting, and swollen glands (especially in the neck). These same symptoms are being seen in the coastal ER's as well. But as family and the RN's have confirmed, these symptoms are not caused by any viral flu. This is not the same as the Asian Flu or any other viral flu bug. These symptoms are directly caused by a lack of oxygen due to airborne chemicals and toxic gases.
Most family members who work and live further inland have not yet encountered these symptoms since their jobs are indoors where recirculating air conditioning systems isolate them from constant outdoor air exposure. They also drive to/from work with the recirculating A/C system on to keep cool. The same applies when they are in their air conditioned homes. But those who do work outdoors 10-20 miles inland have recently experienced many of the same flu-like symptoms as those in the family who are working on the boats.
According to the ER nurses, in the southern Mississippi and Louisiana areas there have been more than 600 cases of what their staffs have appropriately named the "BP flu". The vast majority of these "flu" cases are with those people who are working along the coast, as well as further offshore, on boats; and those who live along the southernmost areas along the Gulf of Mexico. One might initially think - based on mainstream media reports - that these flu-like symptoms are nothing to be overly concerned about. This is not a matter of 'take two aspirins and call me in the morning'. Nothing could be further from the truth.
As reported by researchers at Columbia Univ.'s National Center for Disaster Preparedness (NCDP) in late July 2010, more than 40 percent of adults living within ten miles of the coast say they have experienced direct exposure to the oil spill or clean-up effort. Within this group, nearly 40 percent reported physical symptoms of skin irritations and respiratory problems.
CYANOSIS: OXYGEN STARVATION
Along with the symptoms that mimic flu-like viruses, there are increasing cases of severe symptomatic cyanosis. These rapidly increasing symptoms range from bluish lip color to numbness in fingers and toes. There is also a fast growing increase of pneumonia cases which are being diagnosed as chemical induced pneumonia. Those working on boats and those living directly on the coast are the most effected.
Cyanosis is simply oxygen starvation in the blood. With a moderate case involving such a lack of oxygen, the skin appears to have a blueish colour. Hands and fingers especially show these signs as will other extremities such as toes and lips. A lack of oxygen in the blood can also have a purplish appearance where the skin surface is red from sun exposure but the blood beneath the skin is blue. Red and blue make purple.
If all these BLUE FLU symptoms were temporary, most everyone suffering from them would eventually recover as the blood becomes increasingly oxygenated once removed from the oxygen depletion source. Short term exposure and biological complications to gases and chemicals that starve the air and lungs from oxygen, creating cyanosis, are usually reversible. However, long term exposure is not fully reversible. Long term exposure depends on how depleted the air is of oxygen and how much time a person has been exposed to that condition.
OXYGEN DEPLETED WATER AND AIR
The same goes for oxygen levels in water. Fish, turtles, and crustaceans (shrimp and lobsters) die quickly when oxygen levels have been depleted. Dolphins and whales are mammals and they depend on surface water air to breathe their oxygen. Since May 2010, there has been an epidemic of dead fish, turtles, dolphins, sharks and whales in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The mainstream media has failed to report this truth. As someone who works closely with other animal rescue and wildlife rehabilitation services throughout the southeast, I have been told there are very few turtles or marine animals being rescued because the majority are already dead when found.
It's more than obvious that the water in the northern Gulf of Mexico is severely depleted of oxygen. This also applies to the surface air that dolphins and whales - as well as people - depend on to breathe.
In May 2010, tests done by various research vessels in the northern Gulf of Mexico showed a 30-60% decrease in oxygen levels. This was three long months ago. This surely accounts for the vast fish kills. But when you combine lethal chemicals - such as Corexit - along with oil and gas by-products from large plumes of oil hidden deep in the Gulf, the problem is yet in its initial stages. As the algae naturally attacks these chemicals, oil and gases, a further oxygen depletion occurs. It's nature's way of attempting to correct the problem. The result of that natural process is severe oxygen depletion.
STAGE TWO: THE BLUE PLAGUE
While the Blue Flu symptoms are increasing for more and more people, those who have had 30+ days of direct exposure to the toxic and oxygen depleted Gulf air and water are in immediate danger of permanent and irreversible biological damage... if not death.
How humans and animals biologically react to cyanosis depends on the severity of exposure and time of exposure. At first, the body will compensate as best it can. But sooner or later, the body is overcome and severe complications begin. Without enough oxygen, the body will begin to rot and die from the inside out. The outward signs can be numbness in extremities, swollen necks and throats, blue lips, dark purple tongues, blue or gray skin colour, and even bloodshot eyes as the body attempts to filter out the toxins. Lymph nodes and adenoids are overburdened.
But these outward signs are the result of severe inward problems. Left exposed to a lack of oxygen, the kidneys and liver will fail and shut down. Heart failure is next. It's the same as someone who has decided to commit suicide by carbon monoxide depletion of oxygen in a locked garage with their car running. They die from cyanosis, the lack of oxygen. People living and working along the northern Gulf coast will eventually die the same way if exposed to depleted oxygen levels long enough.
NO END IN SIGHT
The oil and gas from the Biloxi Dome area has not stopped flowing. It's an oil exploration well which blew out on or about February 13, 2010 so severely that it deposited the Blow Out Preventer (BOP) and the steel well casing hundreds of yards away on the ocean floor. There is nothing there to cap or abate the oil flow with. It's an open hole that is nothing less than an oil, gas and tar volcano. While a certain leaking BP well may have been capped seven miles northeast of the Biloxi Dome area, an already large underwater lake of oil at an approximate 3,000 foot depth is rapidly growing each hour. It's estimated 9 mile length in May 2010 is surely dwarfed in size now.
Don't be fooled by the lack of surface oil being reported by the mainstream media shills and BP. Corexit hides what is beneath and Corexit is more toxic than crude oil itself. The only people denying the existence of the underwater plumes are the people at BP. And they offer no evidence to contradict the extremely solid evidence provided by four universities, including LSU, of the existence of these huge underwater plumes of oil.
The BLUE PLAGUE Spreads
Just because you don't live on the Gulf coast, don't think the Blue Plague won't come your way. As more gas, oil and tar fills the Gulf of Mexico from the Biloxi Dome area, more toxins are released into the water and the air.
Evaporation, storms, and hurricanes will spread the continually increasing oil-chemical-gas toxins inland. Certain areas may experience more severe exposure than those living on the Gulf coast. In concentrated amounts, it will be as acid rain that has washed and destroyed your crops, trees or grass. It will enter streams, lakes, and underground water sources. Fish, mammals, and animals will die just as they have in and along the Gulf coast. Potable water and food will be effected. The air will be effected. The Blue Plague will grow as more airborne and cloud-filled toxins spread the Gulf oil and gas lakes beneath the surface inland.
If you don't believe this is happening now or will never happen in your home town in the future, then just keep your face buried in your HDTV screen and keep the beer flowing while you watch NASCAR races and Dr. Phil. But if you have decided the mainstream media is not telling you the truth, then wake up and smell the roses. The true health effects on humans will only begin to surface years from now and this includes proven carcinogenic cancers.
The Blue Flu may be all that most will have to endure because of the spewing oil volcano in the Gulf of Mexico, but don't bet your life on avoiding the Blue Plague.

Anyone suggest a lab to send these plants for analysis that is not $1000s to be tested? No wonder Wall St has been betting on famine and mass food shortages.

We are having the same problems here in the NC mountains, all exactly as you described, burning of plants. I have read that if you will add baking soda and epson salts to the top of your soil, it will help.
God help us all.
